The Center for Discovery's Fairfax branch, situated just 14 miles from Washington, D.C., offers both residential and partial hospitalization services for adolescents aged 10-18 dealing with eating disorders. Our gender-inclusive residential program creates a structured environment that encourages patients to concentrate on their healing process, free from outside distractions. In this setting, clients follow a consistent weekly schedule that includes designated times for waking up, sleeping, chores, and meals, fostering a sense of accountability and establishing a daily rhythm. A diverse range of therapeutic approaches is utilized, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), along with nutrition education, coping skills, relapse prevention techniques, and everyday life skills. Typically, individuals engage in five to six hours of therapy daily, encompassing individual, group, and family sessions, complemented by structured meal times and social activities. All therapeutic interventions are grounded in the Health at Every Size (HAES) philosophy, with yoga therapy incorporated twice a week. The partial hospitalization program (PHP) serves as a bridge between residential and outpatient care. The dedicated treatment team comprises dietitians, psychiatrists, and counselors who provide individual, family, and group counseling, medication management, nutritional guidance, and meal oversight. PHP takes place 5-6 days a week, allowing participants to return home at night, helping them to practice new skills in a familiar environment while maintaining some of the structure found in residential care. Clients will receive one or two supervised meals or snacks at the facility, while the rest can be enjoyed at home, facilitating the application of learned skills outside the program. Additionally, Center for Discovery offers free online support groups for patients engaged in the PHP. The HAES approach focuses on promoting health independent of weight, advocating for body acceptance and healthy behaviors. It is an evidence-based framework that recognizes that health is achievable regardless of one’s body shape, size, weight, or BMI. The core principles of HAES include weight inclusivity, health enhancement, respectful care, nourishment for well-being, and joyful movement.
At this center, individuals struggling with eating disorders can receive comprehensive support aimed at managing their symptoms, developing effective coping strategies, and improving their overall physical well-being with the assistance of skilled professionals.
