Outside In is a private, nonprofit facility that provides an extensive array of support services for individuals, families, and youth across Pennsylvania. Emphasizing both outpatient and residential treatment, Outside In focuses on addressing substance use issues alongside co-occurring mental health challenges. The center primarily caters to adolescent males aged 13–18 in its residential program while also offering outpatient services aimed at young adults and families. Additional options include weekend-based programs and a full academic curriculum available year-round for eligible participants, who are often referred by local juvenile probation authorities as a rehabilitative measure. This enables young individuals to continue their education and develop essential life skills instead of being sentenced to detention. They are treated as learners, with a strong emphasis on cultivating self-esteem and taking control of their futures. The foundational belief of the organization is that recovery is fundamentally a process of learning and growth. The treatment strategy at Outside In encompasses various levels of care tailored to individual clinical requirements, with placement determined by established assessment tools such as the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria for adolescent patient placement. The residential aspect, known as Pathway to Recovery, accommodates 48 adolescent males and employs a range of evidence-based methodologies. Outpatient and in-home care includes individual, group, and family therapy sessions. The treatment model integrates the "Stages of Change" framework with motivational interviewing (MI) and utilizes evidence-based approaches like Multi-Dimensional Family Therapy (MDFT) and adventure therapy, promoting both emotional understanding and practical skill development. Outside In features three primary programs aimed at empowering youth to enhance their life skills and reshape their futures. The Sanctions Program serves as a weekend alternative for those involved with the courts, combining community service with structured life skills training and in-home case management. The Voyagers Program offers a 4–6-month residential journey that incorporates outdoor adventures, daily group interactions, and restorative justice practices to foster accountability, teamwork, and personal development. Their Education Program features a continuous academic pathway with options for diplomas and GEDs, personalized group instruction, and practical vocational training in fields like carpentry, technology, and photography—encouraging students to engage with learning meaningfully. Recovery planning starts promptly and adopts a cooperative approach through the "Single Plan," a customized aftercare and relapse prevention strategy created within the first 30 days of a client's admission. This plan is regularly revised to assist individuals in progressing towards independent living. Continuous support is extended through alumni networks and peer mentorship programs that aim to help clients sustain their long-term recovery journey.
The facility specializes in addressing issues related to substance use as well as any simultaneous mental health challenges. A tailored treatment approach is employed to tackle both aspects holistically, ensuring a supportive and empathetic environment that fosters complete recovery.
