Sheppard Pratt is dedicated to assisting young adults, professionals at pivotal moments, and individuals experiencing significant life changes who struggle with substance abuse and concurrent mental health issues. The center employs research-backed approaches that focus on both mental and physical well-being. Each resident undergoes an extensive mental health assessment, which includes diagnosis and psychiatric consultation throughout their time at the facility. Therapy options at Sheppard Pratt encompass individual therapy, group sessions, family therapy, DBT, medication management, and psychodynamic therapy. Additionally, they offer a diverse range of holistic and experiential activities, including rock climbing, yoga, art therapy, acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine, and equine therapy. Weekly, participants engage in 35 hours of group and family therapy. The skilled staff is comprised of psychiatrists, psychologists, psychoanalysts, therapists, social workers, and nursing professionals. Pioneering in mental health care, Sheppard Pratt was among the first institutions to implement transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for treatment-resistant depression and continues to engage in research initiatives. Since its establishment in 1853, Sheppard Pratt has been committed to its foundational mission and values, closely tied to Quaker principles. The core tenets of simplicity, peace, integrity, community, and equality inform both their ethical standards and operational strategies. Moses Sheppard, the founder, demonstrated a profound commitment to social justice, resulting in the charter for the asylum granted in 1853. After his passing in 1857, he entrusted his entire estate to the establishment of The Sheppard Asylum, marking the largest financial contribution to mental health of that era, totaling $571,441.41. Following 34 years of development, The Sheppard Asylum officially opened on December 6, 1891, in Towson, MD, on a sprawling 340-acre campus that remains in use today.
